An air source heat pump takes warmth from the outside air, even on cold days, and uses it to heat your home and hot water. Because it moves heat rather than burning fuel to create it, a well-designed system can be very efficient and significantly lower-carbon than a traditional boiler.
Cost is the usual sticking point, but it's more affordable than many people expect. Through the government's Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) you can currently get a £7,500 grant towards an installation if you're eligible, and there's 0% VAT on renewable heating installations until March 2027.
